DESCRIPTION:
A perennial herb reaching 60–100 cm in height, with erect square stems, ovate-toothed leaves, and upright spikes of tubular, deep blue to violet flowers. Like other Scutellaria species, it features a distinctive helmet-like upper petal (“skullcap”), which gives the genus its name.

USABLE PARTS: Aerial parts – especially leaves and flowering tops

MEDICINAL PROPERTIES:
Traditionally used as a nervine, mild sedative, and anti-inflammatory. Supports nervous tension, restlessness, mild insomnia, and muscle spasms. Shows antioxidant and adaptogenic qualities. While less studied than Scutellaria lateriflora, it shares many similar applications in folk use.

UNDESIRED EFFECTS:
Generally well tolerated. May cause drowsiness in sensitive individuals or if used in large doses. Not recommended during pregnancy without supervision.

COMBINING WITH OTHER MEDICINES:
Can be blended with valerian, lemon balm, or passionflower for sleep and anxiety. Also works with oat straw and lavender in calming teas.

PREPARATION:
Used as a tea, tincture, or herbal extract. Aerial parts are harvested in bloom and dried for infusions aimed at calming the nervous system and relieving tension.

HARVEST TIME:
Mid to late summer, during full flowering (June–August)

HARVEST METHOD:
Cut the top 1/3 of the plant when flowers are fresh and vibrant. Harvest on a dry day to ensure quality drying and storage.

CONSERVATION (STORAGE):
Dry quickly in a shaded, ventilated space. Store in airtight containers away from moisture and light. Best used within 1 year.

Note: While not as widely known as American or Chinese skullcap, Scutellaria altissima is a valuable European native with soothing and balancing effects on the nervous system, used in traditional herbalism across Central and Southeastern Europe.
