DESCRIPTION:
A perennial herb in the nettle family (Urticaceae), reaching 30–70 cm tall, with reddish stems, soft, oval, alternate leaves, and tiny greenish flowers that cluster along the upper leaf axils. It does not sting, unlike true nettles. It blooms from late spring to early autumn and is often found growing from old stone walls and crevices.

USABLE PARTS: Aerial parts – especially leaves and flowering tops

MEDICINAL PROPERTIES:
Traditionally used as a diuretic, depurative, and anti-inflammatory. Employed to support kidney and bladder health, especially in cases of gravel, cystitis, and urinary tract irritation. Also considered mildly expectorant and soothing to mucous membranes.

UNDESIRED EFFECTS:
May cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals (notably hay fever-like symptoms due to airborne pollen). Not recommended during pregnancy due to diuretic activity.

COMBINING WITH OTHER MEDICINES:
Commonly blended with corn silk, birch leaf, or dandelion for urinary health. Can be used with marshmallow or licorice root to protect mucous membranes.

PREPARATION:
Used as an infusion or decoction for urinary and kidney complaints. Also included in cleansing spring tonics. Occasionally applied externally for minor skin inflammation.

HARVEST TIME:
Late spring to early summer, before or during early flowering (May–July)

HARVEST METHOD:
Cut aerial parts above ground with scissors or a sickle on a dry day. Best harvested from clean, uncontaminated sites.

CONSERVATION (STORAGE):
Dry quickly in the shade, in a well-ventilated area. Store in paper bags or airtight containers, away from light and moisture. Use within one year.

⚠️ Note: Though a modest and often-overlooked herb, Parietaria officinalis has a long history in European herbalism as a gentle urinary remedy. However, its airborne pollen is a strong allergen, so drying and handling should be done with care.
